The Celebration of the Birth Anniversary of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, the Sovereign of the Dharma
I supplicate to Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel,
The Benevolent who bestowed us with the shade of Happiness,
The Gracious one, who brought the whole of the Southern Valley of Darkness
Under one umbrella of the Brilliant Palden Drukpa.
Thus, to offer few praises and homage verses to the Benevolent Precious Master:
Due to the general merits of the country and its beings, the precious master had entered the country and conducted many great compassionate acts. The highlights of few of the many Great compassionate conducts of the precious master Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, the embodiment of Compassion and the manifestation of Cherezig himself, is as follows:
Like the essence of the nature of the mind remains in the body of the enlightened qualities, the essence of the Buddha manifested as Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel in many marvelous forms. Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel took many manifestations until he was born into the ordinary human body with the wisdom that was like a mirror that reflected the wisdom of the Buddha.
First, he rose in the form of Phag Chho Jigten Wangchuk in the presence of Sangay Nampar Nangzey in the Blissful Land of Dewachen and worked tirelessly for the benefit of the countless sentient beings.
Likewise, he manifested as Rigden Padma Karpo of Shambala in the North, as Dharma-King Songtsen Gampo in Tibet, as Khenchhen Bodhisatto in Zahor (present state of Himachal Pradesh), as Panchhen Narotapa in Kashmir, as Choeje Dagpo Lhaje (Gampopa) in the Nyel valley, as Choeje Tshangpa Gyare in the Gya clan of upper Nyang, in the eastern Buddha field Nangpar Gawa as bodhisattva Nangwa Duldrel, Gyalwang Kunga Paljor in the Land of Snow Phuela Harir, as the son of a Chinese emperor – Jamyang Choeki Drakpa and in the eastern vally of Kongbu, as Kunkhhen Padma Karpo. Manifesting in various forms as such, he conducted inconceivable acts for the benefit of all sentient beings in various time and places.
In a valley called Gardor located in the estate of Namdruk Jangchubling, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel was born on the 11th day of the 11th month of the Wood Horse Year, 1594, to Yab Tenpai Nyima, an unstained Drukpa lineage holder, and Yum Sonam Pelgyi Buthri, the daughter of a ruler of Kyisho.
Then, after learning, contemplating and accomplishing in meditation and in all his other studies, he succeeded Mipham Choekyi Gyalpo as the Drukpa seat holder.
At that time, our country was a place where people did not respect the virtuous acts and there were no tradition which prohibited any kind of misdeeds. The chance for our country to be a place of bliss and happiness was comparable to the tip of a needle.
But with accordance with the prophecy of Buddha and Ugyen Guru Rinpoche, and also due to the merits of the beings of the southern land, Zhabdrung Rinpoche, upon the urging and encouragement of the protective deity Yeshey Goenpo, kindly accepted the southern land offered to him by Yeshey Goenpo. And in 1616, the Fire Dragon year, Zhabdrung Rinpoche, at the age of 23 years, arrived in the southern land, escorted by protective deity Yeshey Goenpo, carrying along with him the Rangjung Kharsapani, the last relic of Choeje Tshangpa Gyare.
Upon entering Bhutan, Zhabdrung Rinpoche was received by troops of Woptsho Lama at Gasa. After Zhabdrung Rinpoche arrived in Bhutan, his compassionate activities, that would benefit the country and the sentient beings, gained momentum. In 1620, Iron Male Monkey year, Zhabdrung Rinpoche constructed the Chari Dorjeden monastery setting the path for the Palden Drukpa order (spiritual part of the government) to flourish in the country.
Guru Rinpoche prophesied that On a hill which resemble the trunk of a sleeping elephant, a person known by the name of Namgyel shall arrive. At the junction of the two rivers, the main Dzong of Drukpa will be established. And as per that prophecy, the central monastic residence of Palden Drukpa was founded at Punathang Dewachen Phodrang by Zhabdrung Rinpoche. He also annihilated all the enemies of the Dharma; under him, the secular system flourished. In brief, he created laws where there were none, set traditions and cultures where there were none and bound the country with the establishment of the Dual system of Government which is successfully functional to this day, all due to the benevolent Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel.
Due to all those countless, compassionate acts of Zhabdrung Rinpoche, from that time forth, the country that used to be known as Lhomon came to be known as Druk and the people who were called Lhomonpa came to be called as Drukpas. Hence, our country became a land where Dharma flourished which resembled the Buddha field Womin ghi Zhing.
Due to inconceivable, compassionate acts and blessing of the invincible Zhabdrung Rinpoche, the people of this country will always remain grateful and indebted to him. To remember to be grateful to the benevolent Zhabdrung Rinpoche is the utmost importance for the people of this country. Therefore, today, all the Dratshangs and Shedras of the 20 Dzongkhags shall celebrate the birth anniversary of our father Zhabdrung Rinpoche with an extensive feast (Tshog ki Khorlo) offering on his altar.
